You may already be familiar with the process of mixing. If you’re reading this article, then it’s likely you are at least aware that live performances use sound mixing boards to balance out the volume levels, panning, and EQ of each instrument and microphone line to ensure the performance sounds properly balanced. You may also be familiar with studio-based mixing practices, which incorporates what I just mentioned, but also includes effects processing like reverb, chorus, delay, saturation, and auto-tune, which can be applied to individual tracks or the mix at large.
I’ve been a fan of singer Haco’s strange vocal work for years, having discovered her somewhat obscurely through her band Hoahio. Paradise of Replica is the second and final studio record by her avant-garde pop group, After Dinner, and it’s pretty spectacular in every way. Since house concerts are, well, in houses, the expectations set at these events are inherently quite different from those at traditional venues. While the practice of audience members getting shmammered at venue shows has become accepted and even expected, the rules are different at house concerts. These concerts are more intimate, more focused on the music — they’re likely to be quieter and the connections between the artist and audience are therefore stronger. House concerts typically won’t feature a loud, drunk, and rowdy crowd, and you won’t need to unstick your shoes from any PBR-soaked floors, either.
Something like a well-placed delay or reverb can add unbelievable character to a percussion part. Since your kicks, snares, toms, and hi-hats are each isolated, you have the power to add effects your entire kit as well as individual instruments. Depending on the character of the track you’re building, these effects allow you to construct drum parts that are clear and driving, or ambient and unpredictable.

No engineer’s library would be complete without some technical information, and Ballou’s Handbook, now in its fifth edition, is a serious contender for being your go-to in this field. A university-standard textbook, it’s not for the layperson.

As another example, my parents played a lot of country when I was growing up. So whenever I hear pedal steel guitars and tight harmonies, the combination always brings me back to my childhood living room.
